This type of insurance protects your greatest asset, your ability to earn.
Where you cannot work due to illness or injury, this insurance can protect you against the consequences of being without income for a period of time. You will be paid a monthly payment until you are able to work again (subject to policy conditions).
Some statistics go to show that incurring a disability is not so remote as many would think:
- Approximately 30% of New Zealanders currently aged 40 will suffer from a disability sometime before they are aged 65 (Source: Davis Financial and Actuarial (2005)
- 12% of New Zealanders have moderate or severe disabilities (Source: Statistics NZ (2002), Disability Counts (2001)
- Over two thirds of disabilities are caused by illness and accordingly no ACC benefit is payable (Source: Statistics NZ – Focusing on Women (2005).
